Bike Lanes In The City Of Victoria
Expansion of Victoria’s bike lane network could help you get around the city safer and faster while protecting the environment. The Project to build a protected bike lane network for all abilities and ages has been a priority for the city of victoria since early 2017. Starting with the first protected bike lane on Pandora Avenue, and then on Fort Street last year. This year, the city is hoping to complete the five-point-four kilometre downtown minimum area, and in following years, branch out to Saanich. The intended outcome for the bike network is to find more ways to move people around and also make it safe and accessible.
The city’s official community plan has estimated that sixty-percent of all trips will be made without a personal vehicle by 2041. Public transit although accessible, isn’t exactly the greenest or fastest option. Walking is as green as you’ll get but it’s not always fast or even an option for some. This leaves cycling as the last alternative to getting stuck in traffic and therefore, a priority to develop.
The only problem with that is how can cycling be accessible to everyone? What about the children, the elderly, and those with disabilities? According to a statistical analysis in Portland in 2006, up to ninety-three percent of people were discouraged or completely disinterested in using a bicycle to get around the city. Victoria plans to eliminate people’s concern for safety by making the transportation infrastructure safer. Instead of keeping conventional on-road bike lanes, the city plans to physically separate the lanes, preventing car accidents and keeping cyclists safe. The new network will also feature shared roadways and multi-use trails.
The Victoria downtown bike lane network is not only an innovative idea, but absolutely necessary. Not only will it reduce car accidents, it will also improve the comfort and safety of cyclists. What’s more, it will help people move around the city faster and preserve the air quality by not producing emissions.
